Turns out that I was right about my behavior, but not the camera's...
I have taken some lackluster pictures....to put it lightly.
Given nice light, of course the phone takes pictures that are at least worthy of the internet. Below I've pasted in a great picture I took of the car in my booth at SEMA.
The picture looks about how you think it would. Clearly, the cell phone isn't going to actually replace a real camera. I was just hoping for solid output like this.I really noticed the problem with the camera when I tried to take pictures to post in my first blog entry about an elevator in my brother's building whose buttons always confuse me. Try as I might, there was no set of angles that would get the phone to take a reasonably clear picture in the moderately well lit elevator. Below is the best picture I could get. The elevator was by no means as dark as this photo came out.
I got so upset that I ended up writing the post about the faulty camera and not the elevator. (It's time will come though, I'm sure) It's since occurred to me that I've had to delete most of the photos I actually would value because they were not clear It's almost like the camera knows when I would really like it to work...and then decides not to.I think it's safe to say that HTC wanted the label of having a 5 MP camera in their phone but did not actually put in the time to make it work right. Perhaps having a flash would correct the problem.
It appears that the multitasking phone I've always dreamed of isn't here yet.

Its funny how you look at your camera phone in the same way as I did. Ive never had a camera in my life, Im not much of a picture taker myself. But when I upgraded to the Droid (I had to convince myself to go the smart phone route bc Im kinda intimidated by them) I was informed that the camera on it was 5 megapixels which was supposed to be pretty good. I was like yeah ok sweet, I just got this phone bc my other broke, I had a free update, and this was the latest out there. Well from then on, I started using my camera here and there to take pictures of what i thought was funny. Im on twitter so i like to twitpic whenever i can. I was actually surprised by the quality in pictures. Granted Im not that big into taking pictures or their quality, but i was actually amazed with how well the pictures looked. Ive even gotten a few comments on the clarity of the photos. I have, however, had those weird frustrating moments where the picture is really blurry or too dark, even when the room is perfectly lit. But i guess it doesnt bother me that much because my expectations were never that high in the first place. Cool post tho, i really enjoyed it! See ya in class!
ReplyDeleteYep, this common misconception (that Megapixels and image quality are directly correlated) has helped sell millions of mediocre cameras. Unfortunately, marketers twist the language and cut costs to make us believe that we're getting a great camera. Mobile phone makers especially cut corners to make it seem like their phone has a better camera than other phones, when really all they did was put small CMOS sensors in the phones instead of CCD sensors that produce better images. And the makers of these products are fully aware of the public's confusion, yet choose to continue to try to fool people. Sooner or later, this bad business practice will catch up with them.
ReplyDeleteMaybe there should be an independent ratings firm that rates cameras based on a much more easily understood scale, such as image clarity. That way, consumers could be fully informed and empowered when buying a new phone or camera.
On another note, why don't elevator's have a cancel button? People push and bump up against the wrong button all the time and there is no way to undo a mistake. It's painful to have to wait for the elevator to stop at an extra floor. I suppose some would argue that the elevator may become confused if you pushed cancel while it was moving to a floor, but with some research, you could develop some default settings to alleviate this concern. Let's start a petition!
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. A cancel button would be awesome.
